3. Carabiner’s – New Bedford
Wall Size: 32,600 sq.ft.
Location: New Bedford, Massachusetts
Wall Builder: Owner Built
There once was a time that little known Carabiner’s in New Bedford was the largest climbing gym in the country. After a series of small expansions they held that title for several years, but had to relinquish it in 2011.
Because the gym was built into a relatively small building the developer needed to maximize wall space. The design of the gym is suited best to beginners with lots of big, clean, vertical to slightly off vertical walls. 65 foot high walls also makes Carabiners tied (with Upper Limits – Bloomington) for the tallest gym in the country.
