Specs: The previous Sanctuary Rock Gym closed in February after 23 years of operation, but a new location has been secured and a grand opening is set for September. The new gym will be more than 10,000 square feet and serve as the anchor facility for a large shopping center (the University Plaza Shopping Center on Fremont Boulevard). Included in that expanse will be 150 parking spaces, seven restaurants, and a bar. Amenities upon the gym’s completion will include bouldering, top-roping, lead climbing, speed climbing, and auto-belaying areas, gear and retail sales, as well as fitness studios for yoga, Pilates, and aerial and circus arts, a MoonBoard, Treadwall, and a Nova XL Arch Bridge. There will also be a designated climbing area for kids, a party area, and an outdoor patio lounge. The gym will also offer outdoor guiding education.

In Their Words: “I could write a book on closing and re-opening and what it brings out in people, both good and bad. Sanctuary Rock Gym created and nurtured a close, committed community of climbers in 23 years and we are excited to be able to offer them a new facility with amazing amenities.” —Michael Bascou, owner
