    Job Title: Performance Coach and Routesetter

    Category: Permanent, Full-time

    Work shift: Friday, Saturday, Weekday Evenings, Self Directed Project Time

    Immediate Supervisor: Owner/Manager

    Wallnuts Climbing Centre (est. 1995) is looking for an experienced coach and routesetter to join our team full-time! The ideal candidate has experience mentoring and is excited to share their expertise with junior employees. You will start as part of our Routsetting Team and our current Performance Coaching team with the possibility for advancement to positions of greater responsibility and leadership.

    If you do not meet every qualification listed below we still want to hear from you! We can provide on the job training to overcome gaps in your work experience.

    1+ years of routesetting experience
    2+ years of coaching experience
    Ability to forerun V4/5.11+ during an eight hour shift, with ability to critique and modify V7+ boulder problems and 5.12 routes.
    Criminal Record Screening Certificate and Vulnerable Sector Check
    Commitment to safety. Willing to adhere to company and industry safety Standard Operating Procedures while setting. This includes but is not limited to SOP’s relating to working on a ladder and working with power tools.
    Great teamwork skills as you collaborate and meet with Management, the Head Setter, fellow Coaches, and Setters on a regular basis
    Focus on compromise and empathy to solve challenges in the workplace
    Excitement to become a championing, enthusiastic member of our climbing community!
    Good command of the English language
    Possessing these assets will make you a more competitive candidate, but their absence will not disqualify you from consideration.

    Coaching Association of Canada Safe Sport and Making Headway Training (can be completed after hiring)
    ACMG CGI Level 1 preferred
    Office administration/computer skills used for communication (Slack, Gmail, Mailchimp), record keeping and calendar management (Rock Gym Pro), scheduling staff (Humanity), project management (Asana) and document management (Google Drive). These can be learned
    Experience supervising, training, and mentoring coaching staff
    Ability to forerun V6/5.12+ during an eight hour shift, with ability to critique and modify V9+ boulder problems and 5.13 routes.

    Wage range from $18/hr to $22/hr depending on experience.

    Roles and Responsibilities:
    Performance Coach

    Make safety a priority
    Dedicated to providing athletes a caring adult who is invested in their well being and growth
    Skilled at using and encouraging a growth mindset
    Knowledge of outdoor climbing skills and practices an asset
    Experience with competition climbing as a coach or athlete an asset


    Design, plan, and implement Performance Team and Development Team curriculum
    Coaching with the assistance of other experienced team coaches regular team sessions
    Understand and teach advanced climbing movement and skills
    Understand and teach training for climbing
    Advise athletes in their personal training plans
    Stay up to date with climbing and training methodologies
    Communicate with Parents about athletes’ progress, needs, as well as opportunities such as competition or travel
    Organize and accompany athlete travel to regional and/or national climbing competitions
    Organize and accompany athlete travel to recreational and/or training events
    Organize and oversee team fundraising (e.g. – Holiday baskets)


    Make safety a priority
    Commit to Wallnuts Climbing Centre’s commercial route setting objectives, and be dedicated to the team
    Be willing to participate in one or more training workshops each year


    Set high-quality commercial routes and boulder problems of all styles and difficulties.
    Effectively give and receive constructive feedback during all stages of the route setting process.
    Strip and wash holds on an as-needed basis.
    Possess a strong desire to become a better climber by gaining a greater understanding of climbing movement.
    Contribute to Wallnuts Climbing Centre’s customer service goals and understand that routesetting, and all associated tasks, contribute to the overall customer experience
    Actively contribute to a positive workplace and effective team
    Attend pre-determined setting days. Currently Fridays from 7:30am to 3:30pm, except when the schedule is modified due to holidays or other important events
    Adhere to the guidance and suggestions from the head setter.
    Implement a self-care routine so that you can stay healthy, and keep up fitness level to meet the demand of setting week after week.
    Must be comfortable working at height on ropes and ladders.
    Physically demanding work. Must be able to lift 50lbs and climb up to 5.11+ moves on routes and boulders

    Additional duties such as marketing, program administration, retail, technical instruction, etc can be added to round out the position and would be dependent on the applicant’s strengths and interests.
