Rocks and Ropes of Tucson and the BLOC climbing + fitness, both based out of Tucson, AZ, are seeking qualified applicants for the position of Head Routesetter. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is capable of leading our current team of routesetters, collaborating with the ownership and management team, and providing the highest level of routes and boulder problems for our gym programs and the Tucson climbing community.
We currently operate two indoor climbing facilities – one fully renovated, expanded, and reopened in February 2019 and the other built in 2012. The two facilities combined offer over 20,000 square feet of climbing wall, a full service fitness area, yoga studio, dedicated climbing training areas, retail space, and an outdoor guide service. Our facilities offer many programs including an active and growing youth climbing team, adult climbing teams, personal training programs, and numerous climbing clinics offered on a monthly basis. We have consistently hosted USA Climbing championship level events on an annual basis and will continue to do so in support of the growth of the sport of climbing.
Tucson is one of the premier outdoor recreation destinations in the country, with year-round access to climbing as well as mountain biking and hiking. There is a lifetime of climbing for all disciplines on several different rock types in the surrounding area. Tucson is also within striking distance of several world-renowned climbing destinations – Hueco Tanks, Joshua Tree, Red Rocks.
-Maintain a safe and professional work environment and hold the other routesetting team members to a high standard of safety and professionalism.
-Lead the routesetting team with the primary goal of providing consistently enjoyable and challenging routes and boulder problems for all ability levels. Provide critique, feedback, and guidance to the routesetting team members in their job duties.
-Be a contributing member of the management team. Be capable and willing to work with team members in developing new programs and determining the needs of these programs as it may pertain to the routesetting program.
-Engage with program leaders and team coaches to understand and better provide routes and boulder problems for these programs.
-Track route and boulder problem turnover and grade distribution at each facility. Tag climbs and boulders weekly at each location.
-Oversee and assign wall maintenance tasks. Maintain climbing safety systems including anchor inspection, rope inspection, auto-belays, and replace equipment as required.
-Effectively manage hold inventory, routesetting tool/equipment inventory, and associated budget. Maintain a clean and organized routesetting room.
-Assist in coordinating events with consideration of impact on day to day climbing gym operations.
-Ability to climb/set V8 and 5.13
-Level 2 USAC Routesetter certification or actively pursuing Level 2 certification
-Previous experience as a full time routesetter is ideal
