Job Summary:
The Climbing Gym Supervisor position is a unique opportunity to run the day-to-day operations of our climbing gym at MAC. This position supervises the recreation climbing program, special events, and management of climbing gym staff. This position oversees all training curriculum, general operations in the climbing gym, and marketing of the gym offerings and events. MAC seeks candidates who are looking to establish a career in the climbing gym industry and help to develop leaders in our program. Seeking a motivated, team-centric, and experienced candidate who has tremendous leadership skills and climbing knowledge. This position will manage a team of instructors and attendants on a weekly basis who are pursuing development opportunities through our program. The managing of people, evaluation of equipment, managing risk, and development of staff are key parts of the position. Essential Job Functions:

Supervision:

  • Manages staff of instructors and recreational camp staff to ensure the delivery of all program’s curriculums are meeting MAC standards.
  • Creates and manages the weekly schedule and follows the scheduling guidelines and timeframes for posting the schedule for classes and camps.
  • Ensures the Climbing Gym is maintained to safety and cleanliness standards. Submits maintenance, housekeeping and technology work orders as necessary for repairs, maintenance and general upkeep.
  • Coordinates and ensures equipment is repaired or replaced as necessary.
  • Manages daily huddle updates to communicate any operational, location, and/or departmental information to the climbing gym staff.
  • Attends the weekly/bi-weekly meetings with Outdoor Manager.
  • Oversees all training and instruction curriculum.
    Works with Manager to cross train staff on MAC service and values.
  • Collaborates with the Head Route Setter about the Programs setting needs.
  • Assists in developing, managing and achieving the Outdoor Department’s annual operating budgets.
    Implements departmental policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Effectively responds to members’ comments and concerns to include assigned sounding board comments, website comment replies, emails, etc.
  • Promotes the MAC code of conduct in club activities and demonstrates the importance of providing quality service to members.
  • Attends committee meetings and club leadership meetings as assigned by Manager.

Sport Specific: Climbing

  • Coordinates the implementation of MAC Climbing recreational camps, classes, clinics and events. This includes planning, scheduling, staffing, promotion and evaluating of offerings. May need to assist as an instructor substitute when needed.
  • Stays up-to-date in the Outdoor Industry by taking advantage of professional advancement opportunities.
  • Ensures that the Climbing instructors stay current on industry trends.
  • Performs regular PPE checks of climbing gym equipment and assess for retirement or repair in compliance with industry standards. Takes appropriate steps in order to eliminate potentially unsafe or hazardous equipment. Action may be to repair an item, remove the item and/or ensure area is off limits to members until repair is complete.
  • Provides consistency in the area of safety. Recognizes and/or anticipates potentially dangerous situations and any unsafe behavior and take appropriate action to prevent accident or injury. Action may include approaching members and communicating guidelines, demonstrating safe techniques, increased education and awareness of safety rules, correcting unsafe activity.
  • Route-setting as requested by Manager. General route setting may occur every week or depending on activities or special events. Route setting includes putting up routes on the wall or stripping existing routes on the wall for adequate turnover. This means cleaning routes by unbolting from the wall and washing the holds in a dishwasher. Once clean and dry the holds will be stored or put back on the wall during route setting.

Club Specific:

  • Projects a positive, outgoing image and utilizes interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with members, guests, the public and staff of all ages.
    Complies with all Club safety policies and procedures demonstrating safe work practices. Identifies and reports unsafe or hazardous work conditions. Reports all workplace injuries and illnesses to the Outdoor Manager and Human Resources.
  • Promotes the MAC code of conduct in club activities and demonstrates the importance of providing extraordinary customer service to members and partners with staff inside and outside of the club.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Understands other MAC department functions, offerings, and partnerships within the clubhouse.
  • Complete KPI’s set by Outdoor Manager for MAC initiatives.

Secondary Functions:

  • Fill in as liaison for Committees as needed.
  • Support employee engagement and initiatives by serving on workgroups and various committees.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by Outdoor Manager or Assistant Athletic Director.

Essential Tools, Equipment, Vehicles, and/or Machinery:

  • Essential job functions require the use of a computer and working within the Microsoft team’s platform. Must be proficient with Google Drive. Ability to complete training on MAC’s NorthStar platform, TeamSnap platform, and
    Rock Gym Pro platform.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle for transporting members and staff to and from competition and or outdoor programs. May require you to drive company van or oversized vehicles.
  • Requires the use of ladders, impact drivers, and operating a lift inside the clubhouse.
  • Must be proficient and knowledgeable with current equipment trends needed to run a climbing gym.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Candidate must meet the physical demands to successfully perform vital functions of the job. Must be able to demonstrate climbing movement and work comfortably and safely at varying heights. Work may be occasionally performed in awkward positions when setting routes, managing equipment, performing cleaning duties, and minor repairs behind the wall like tee-nut replacement and safety checks. Job entails frequent walking, stooping, bending, squatting, climbing, and lifting up to 50lbs. Employees frequently move or lift up to 25lbs. Must have the ability to move easily on soft or irregular surfaces and stand on feet for continuous hours at a time. Work is performed in a climbing gym and often in an outdoor environment that may require hiking or scrambling up rock. Exposure to incidents requiring the administration of first aid may occur in a wilderness environment.
 
Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in a climbing gym with route setting experience preferred.
  • CWA Provider is required or obtained within 1st year of filling the position.
  • Working knowledge and proven experience required on belay system using many different belay devices, safety techniques and checks on harness and belay, basic knots necessary for climbing.
  • Ability to Lead Climb and proficiently teach this aspect of climbing to comply with industry standards.
  • Significant experience in the field of recreation including experience in outdoor related activities preferred.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a variety of people under a variety of circumstances.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and office procedures preferred. Ability to accurately enter member data.
  • Possession of current AED, CPR and WFA certification required within the first 6 months of employment. WFR preferred.
  • Ability to understand the importance of safety inside and outside the club
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members, guests and employees.
  • Demonstrated professional and courteous communication skills with emphasis on customer/member service.
  • Understands and implements minimal impact principles.
