    DYNO Detroit, located in the Eastern Market district of Detroit, MI, is Detroit’s first full-service climbing gym and seeking a full-time Assistant Head Routesetter. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, collaborative, and able to work effectively within our routesetting team. Our routesetting program strives to be modern and professional, taking pride in the product they provide to our dedicated climbing community. Candidates must embody enthusiasm to create climbs for all, while contributing their own unique style to our routesetting team and adhering to the highest safety standards at all times.

    General Expectations:

    • You’ll be a creator of the DYNO Detroit climbing experience and curator of all climbing terrain and related safety equipment.
    • Full-time position, 40 hours per week, 8am-6pm, Monday-Thursday. Reports to Head Routesetter.
    • 3 days of ropes and 1 day of boulders per week on a 8-12 week cycle.
    • Adhere to the highest safety standards with regards to working at height and use of appropriate PPE at all times.
    • Manage risk associated with both the daily routesetting environment and the terrain that the team creates (ie: cordon off the area during setting; make sure that routes are well protected and falls are predicted and managed)
    • Diligently check safety equipment (quickdraws, bolt hangers, top-ropes, autobelays, system boards) weekly and repair or replace as needed, while ensuring accurate records are maintained.
    • Ensure holds are washed thoroughly and sorted while maintaining a clean and organized hold room.
    • Help brainstorm, plan and execute creative, exciting, and inclusive in-house climbing competitions for our community.
    • Maintain and respect routesetting equipment, while repairing or suggesting replacement as needed
    • Keep tabs on hold, bolt, tape, rope and equipment inventory.
    • Perform facility maintenance such as repairing walls/flooring, cleaning air filters and vacuuming behind walls.
    • Must demonstrate a positive attitude, high level of integrity and be a team player at all times.
    • Maintain a commitment to a healthy body and improvement of fitness and technique; we will make the same commitment to your wellness.
    • Work to promote the product while committing to continuously improving routesetting skillset.
    • Set and uphold community standards for climbing ethics and conduct inside the gym and out.
    • Build rapport with the climbing community through climbing, observing and engaging with climbers during and after your workday.
    • Engage with staff and clientele with enthusiasm and openness for the purpose of promoting DYNO Detroit Culture and our routesetting team.


    • Two years routesetting experience in a rope climbing gym, preferred.
    • While routesetting experience is preferred, it is not required. Candidates, however, must demonstrate the ability to understand, perform and communicate a high level of climbing movement.
    • Demonstrated success in working within a team environment
    • Must have ability to forerun lead routes, top rope routes, and boulder problems up to V7 and 5.13
    • USAC certification, preferred.
    • Familiarity with Petzl WaH equipment, preferred
    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent


    • Pay is hourly, starting at $22-$28/hr based on experience
    • 10 days PTO, increases to 15 days at second anniversary

    Why Setting here is Sweet:

    • 12k sq ft of rope walls ranging from 30-50 ft. 50 rope lanes, 30 lead lanes and 10 autobelays.
    • 5k sq ft of bouldering terrain with 120+ problems
    • Walls built by Walltopia and designed by Jason Kehl to include diverse angles and big panels.
    • Large selection of holds, fiberglass and volumes.
    • Rope setting done primarily from a LIFT, permanently on site.
    • Complete Petzl Work at height kits (provided) to be used when setting from ropes.
    • Hold washing is a breeze with our ClimbLab ultrasonic cleaner. Power Washing is minimal.

    Physical Demands and Work Environment:

    Candidates must be able to perform various physical tasks including working at heights, climbing, balancing and lifting objects. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Manual dexterity, walking on different surfaces, computer use, and effective communication are also essential. Lifting weights up to 50 pounds may be required.

    The job involves exposure to loud noise, vibrations, airborne particles, and potential hazards such as falling objects and trip hazards. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. There’s occasional risk from moving mechanical parts, mechanical burns, and bodily fluids. Personal Protective Equipment is mandatory for certain tasks.

    The application deadline is May 1, 2024. Although we are looking for someone to join the crew and grow with DYNO Detroit, consideration would be given to experienced setters who are interested in working for a shorter amount of time on a per week, contract basis.
