Position/Title: Senior Routesetter

Method is seeking routesetters for its new 25k sq ft facility projected to open in early 2020. The gym is located in the heart of downtown Newark, NJ, just 20 minutes via public transit from New York City, one of America’s most bustling, diverse and vibrant metropolises.

The impact that great routesetting has on climbing communities and the critical role it plays in the success of a climbing gym cannot be overstated. Routesetters are teachers, artists, technicians, athletes and craftspeople. As such, the routesetting program will prioritize quality and creativity to promote an environment of playful experimentation.

Method understands the physical demands of high quality routesetting and will always strive to maintain sustainable workloads and provide resources to keep our setters healthy, strong and psyched.

Job Description: 

Senior Routesetters are career-oriented and interested in growing with Method. Ideal candidates have a nuanced understanding of climbing movement, an eye for aesthetics and enjoy being challenged. They will act as second-in-command to the Chief Routesetter, producing consistent, diverse, high-quality climbs in a collaborative team environment. Senior Routesetters may often be expected to supervise or manage Assistant Routesetters and perform a variety of tasks as delegated by the Chief.

Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years of full-time routesetting experience required (ropes and boulders/commercial and competition)
USAC certifications preferred
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Highly adaptable
Ability to maturely accept and discuss criticism
Ability to set and forerun grades up to V6~V7 and 5.12 in a variety of styles
Excellent verbal communication skills
Ability to work on a team as both a leader and a subordinate

The Gunks (New Paltz, NY); 1.5 hrs away; over 600 established boulder problems and over 1000 established rope climbs
Haycock (Bucks County, PA); 1.5 hrs away; over 700 established boulder problems
Powerlinez (Ramapo, NY); 1 hr away; over 200 established boulder problems
Many more areas can be found within a 2 to 3 hrs drive in and around the tri-state area.
