“Ideally, you’ll ask for a letter of recommendation long before you need it. One example would be when you resign from a job. That gives your boss or coworker plenty of time to write it. Likewise, if you want to ask a teacher, asking well before the semester or the school year ends gives them plenty of time to write something thoughtful and helpful instead of rushing and slapping something together.”
