The Cliffs at Gowanus is looking for an experienced coach to join our brand new, super psyched, competitive youth team! We are looking for an individual who has extensive knowledge and experience in rock climbing, competitive youth sport and youth development. Our competitive coaches serve not only as instructors but mentors and cornerstones of our community and therefore we are looking for someone who can lead by example. As an assistant coach you will collaborate with the Head Coach as well as the other assistant coaching staff to weave together a cohesive and engaging curriculum, helping each athlete strive for personal and collective success.

Youth Coach Job Responsibilities

Coach groups of youth athletes on assigned program days or team emphasizing skill development, risk management, team cohesion, community expectations, and fun.

Maintain a strong understanding of existing Cliffs program curriculum, policies + procedures.

Come prepared to run practice within the role assigned, each practice should utilize a prepared lesson plan that provides a variety of activities to develop individual skills + abilities.

Utilize existing program curriculum and collaborate with the coaching team to plan and execute team practice plans that supports youth athletes in meeting program outcomes + progress within their individual development plans.

Create a fun + enriching team practice environment while sharing a facility with members, guests, and other classes.

Maintain a strong understanding of existing Cliffs program curriculum, policies + procedures to run successful programming and effectively manage program risk.

Communicate clearly with program families, facility staff, and the leadership team as needed.

Be a team player, collaborate equally with co-coaches, share in set-up + clean-up task-loads, and a willingness to serve as a positive role model for our youth athletes.

Follow existing protocols for responding to injuries or incidents as they occur.

Stay active within the climbing community, keep climbing knowledge fresh by spending time climbing yourself or watching others climb.

Attend staff trainings as expected.

Support in maintaining a positive environment for all youth program athletes and a culture of respect while sharing the climbing space.

Assist in the care, set-up, and clean-up of program equipment.

Other duties assigned as deemed necessary.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Self-motivating, energetic and a team player.

Experience coaching youth sports to youth athletes across a range of ages and abilities with a preference to experience within rock climbing programs. Preference of at least 2 years working within youth sport.

Strong understanding of positive behavior management and group facilitation skills with evidence of direct work with youth.

Strong personal knowledge and experience of rock climbing, including bouldering, top-rope, and sport lead. Preference of at least 3 years of climbing experience.

Previous experience within competition climbing and/or additional sports training.

Ability to pass a top-rope and sport lead test.

Experience within a collaborative working environment, particularly as a co-facilitator or coach.

Ability to meet certification requirements needed to work with youth based on industry + government requirements, which includes USA-Climbing Membership, SafeSport Trained, and First Aid/CPR requirements.

Willingness to expand knowledge and responsibilities as needed.

Availability:

Applicants must be available during afterschool hours during the weekdays and for some select weekends for competitions. [Practice shifts begin as early as 4:00 PM.]
Applicants must be willing and able to travel outside the city for select weekend competitions.
Applicants must commit to 1 full year with the team (September-July).

Wage Range:
$19-$21 Hourly
