Routesetters at CityROCK are the backbone of our community. From what we create everything else is built, fostered, and inspired. We are not necessarily the face of CityROCK, but we create the foundation that makes our business a world class climbing facility and one of the best places to spend time in Colorado Springs. Every member of the Routesetting team adds something special to the CityROCK experience and we are looking for someone new.

The ideal candidate will be experienced and motivated with a passion for the craft of routesetting and the ambition to build and grow.

All Routesetters report to the Head Routesetter of their respective facility and the Director of Routesetting. This is the first position we will fill as our Routesetting team expands to fill the needs of and expanding business and the opening of the second facility (tentatively by Fall/Winter 2023).

Typical Workweek: 35-40 hours

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • The ability to set and forerun three days a week with an additional work day of safety and maintenance work.
  • Experience Bouldering and Sport climbing and a commitment to climbing at a high level.
  • A passion for the art of movement
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A willingness and openness to feedback and critique
  • Experience with both competition and commercial routesetting
  •  A friendly and outgoing personality
  •  An ability to adapt to a constantly evolving workload, aptitude for taking direction in a regularly changing environment and readiness to respond to unexpected tasks
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications within 30 days of hire date
  • Some full-time routesetting experience in a commercial climbing gym
  • Solid working knowledge of MS Word and Excel

Routesetters are responsible for accomplishing the department’s goals listed below.

Risk Mitigation

  • To work with the understanding that safety is paramount
  •  To ensure that routesetting tools/equipment are safe and properly used.
  • To ensure that the environment in which we are setting has no additional hazards
  • To maintain and inspect equipment according to industry standards
  • To respond appropriately to emergencies

Wages and benefits

  • CityROCK prides itself on offering competitive living wages, good benefits, and an interest in all its employees having a healthy work/life balance
  • Pay will be based on experience, with starting rates matching or above the industry standard. Pay increases as individual becomes proficient in position and achieves certifications and/or experience.
  • Health/dental/vision benefits are available for full-time employees and become active the month following 60 days of employment. CityROCK will contribute towards employees’ benefits package or as a stipend on the paycheck if the employee is covered by a plan other than ours.
  •  401k benefits are available after the first year of employment.
  • Paid vacation benefits are offered after the first year of employment and accrue with tenure.
